JFK missing assignment

1. Abstract words are used in order to create an important sort of tone to make the speach sound as if it is your obligation to listen to it in order to understand JFK’s idea of the future. These words are used to create an alert sort of tone in the speach because each word has to do with important problems in the country and world.

2. “Not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need” “Those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.”

3. yes because he tells the audience they do not need something and then ends up telling them that they actually do need it. The metaphores having to do with animals and science are fresher. The patern always has to do with american enemies.

4. words life asunder and mass misery seem archaic. It seems to add a sort of importance to the speach using these words.

1. These sentences are used to get a straight point across showing the blunt facts of which his ideas of the future of america are.

2. The sentences on the short side seem to be used more of as an idea of the speaker, giving the audience the information of the speakers thoughts and the thoughts of what the speaker tells americans believe in.

3. Complex sentences seem to have hidden energy because the addition of the subordination clause adds a kick to the power of the sentence by adding extra information.

4. The purpose of the speech is suggested that it speaks of the here and now as well as the past along with creating an opportunity for a new start with phrases such as “Ask not what you can do for your country.”

5. The declarative sentences make statements which seem to be meant to be folowed. JFK’s speach seems to be telling the audience of america what to do and how to do what america needs in order to move forward in the future.

6. The two questions are asking the audience if they are up to the challenges which america is going to soon face which transitions the speech towards what needs to be done in the future.

7. “Not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need” Not as a call to battle, though embattled we are “But a call to bear the burden of a long twightlight struggle.

8. These parallel parts in his speach explain how far america has come and to show how it must for further in the future.

9. Hortative is more of an order in which JFK tells the audience what must be done. While imperative is more of a question where JFk asks the audience what must be done. However they both play an important role in persuading and capticating the audience.

This I believe…

Life is filled with cross roads in which everyone may have a new opportunity, or be exposed to something new, or encounter new ideals. However the actions you take following these new encounters define your person as a whole. The decisions made are always under your control and whether you can keep control in your life defines your character. When control in your life is lost negative effects always follow because you’re not making the decisions, something else is making the decisions for you. Although it may not be you controlling these actions the consequences will always be yours.
There have been times where I have lost control and my life has fallen apart to where I have hurt myself and others around me. Times where I have taken a path that shouldn’t have been taken where I believed that I could control myself enough to go down this path when in reality I was not controlling anything, the path I had taken and the things I was doing were controlling me. I had reached a point where everything in my life was going wrong, in school, at home, and with my friends and family. Lying to others then became a big issue which as a result created more problems because I had to keep up with them and suffer the consequences of people finding out. All of this happened because I had lost control of my life and where it was headed, I had no say in what I had become or what was happening to me. Finally it had come to a point where others were forced to take control of my life, to turn me around and get back on the path I should have been taking in the first place. In one point, I am glad it has happened because it has shown me how important the value of control on yourself and your body really is. However it has still held a lasting effect on my life and my person, as well as hurting others around me in the process.
I have come to see that when you take a hold of your life and make the decisions you know are right things become easier. You become happier in your life because you are in control and can have the ability to change things for the better. Your ability to succeed in things also become attainable as well.

I believe that the amount of control you have on yourself contributes a lot to amount of happiness and success in your life.

Fallacy

John and Sally were sitting in a café having coffee discussing money issues in their business and the measures they would have to take to keep their business alive. “Our business is having a serious problem with our health care benefits”, said John. Sally replied, “I think we would have the best luck by cutting a few options out of our benefit so that the healthcare costs are cut.” John gave his input and said, “It would probably be a better if we would just take away healthcare from the higher paid workers as they make enough money to pay for themselves any ways.” “Oh you would say that John, always thinking about yourself but no one else, make them pay the consequences but I’m sure you’ll keep your healthcare benefits.” Replied Sally. John retaliated saying, “I never said that!” The two became silent and continued drinking their coffee.

Burtha and Bart are brother and sister. They do everything together and are never apart. They also have the same physical education class. One day their P.E. teacher explained how they would be playing a new game called dodge ball and that the class would be split up in two teams and Bart and Burtha would be team captains and would choose their teammates. The two argued with their teacher explaining how they were always on the same team together but their teacher would not budge. The two eventually gave up on arguing and played the game. Burtha was obviously a better athlete than Bart and she pegged him with a dodge ball five times. After that game Burtha never played on the same team as Bart again because she said he would just slow her down.

Jim had been having problems with his test scores in math class for the last few months. His overall grade has been taking a hit and he would need to do something fast. While he was walking home one day he notices a penny lying on the middle of the sidewalk. He picks up the penny and places it in his shoe. Jim takes a math test the next day and gets an A on it. He runs home and says, “Mom! I got an A on my math test and its all thanks to this penny!”

The age has no limit. (I’m not quite sure what your trying to say with this one. this sentence is probably not needed it sounds fine without it) People of all ages are currently raising the bar on how far they will go to obtain this “perfect body.”

Once a trend is started, the average teenager or young adult takes the trend in(comma) as if it was a compulsory act.

A teenager typically disagrees to the fact that the media ultimately controls them, but almost every girl has owned a magazine; which (maybe change which to where idk) the media has had an extensive amount of influence on them.

Teenagers think that in order to be liked by a guy, they must be sexy and beautiful. Also, when they see the Pussycat Doll music video, they think about how skinny and “perfect” their bodies are. Once they see those well-desired Pussycat Doll (sentence would sound better without pussycat doll type) type bodies, they strive to be exactly like them in almost every way possible.

young girl would want to be with. Having that boyfriend makes the young girl (delete young girl and replace with her) want to be more like her because she desires to have a boyfriend like hers.

Also(delete) there are Also songs that try to influence self-esteem on girls that think they are not beautiful because they don’t resemble the girl on their favorite magazine

The media is a huge corporation that controls most everything around us. (Maybe think of a better sentence to open your closing paragraph) They have the ability to influence America’s population dramatically, and they (change they to it) have.

You might want to take away the parenthises that are around the word perfect in a few parts of the essay because Grab got pissed about that last year but idk if giddings cares.

Thanks for checking mine : )

Society’s Perfection and Beauty
It is simply impossible for a human being to obtain perfection. Although this objective has been proven to be false, people still attempt to become perfect, not by the attributes of brains and personality but of brawn and beauty. This attempt is not measured by any sort of inner thought of how one should look as well, it is measured by the appearances of others. The appearances that appeal to the majority. These appearances of near perfection are given to us wherever we go. And we strive to create a closer image of self perfection by giving in to corporations and advertisements which sell materials that will help us reach this goal. Mass media is the main contributor to self image and how the majority thinks they should look. Our society has become too attached to this idea of self image and the media has become a crutch on our outlook on beauty. This single image of beauty created by the media needs to be changed because with this image comes a great deal of problems for our society.
Body image is not just born and established simply because there are a few examples shown by the media. Certain tactics and strategies have been used to create this picturesque image around us wherever we go and our society has now become accustomed to it making it a part of our lives. We see this image in every sort of corporate material or entertainment source given out to the public. Magazines are a large
Krone 2
contributor to the advertisement of this perfect body image. Victoria Secret and Sports Illustrated for example fill their pages with pictures of the perfect resemblance of beauty, with what society sees as women who have near perfect faces and bodies. More and more of these examples of the perfect woman are given out each day making more women aspire to become this sense of beauty. Corporations have gone as far to promote this body image in the toys they sell to children. For instance you could look at “Barbie’s cartoon anatomy to find… Ms. Triple-D top, size-2 bottom.”(Drugs, Sports, Body Image and G.I. Joe). This doll which exploit’s thus perfect single body image is one of the most popular toys for female children. Television is also used to influence us on what is and isn’t good looking. Soap operas contain the men and women that many people aspire to become because of their success and acceptance in the eyes of other people. Entertainment shows such as Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood explain to society about what is good looking and what is not by showing different celebrities choices in changing their appearance and whether the media accepts those choices or not. These shows are one of the main ways that the scale of beauty is set. As a result of this mass media exploitations “Popular culture promotes a thin, sometimes dangerously so, body image that most Americans do not live up to” (End Weight Discrimination). These courses of media are a large part of most of societies life, and with these television shows and magazines the ideal body image is set and described for people to see and understand.
Beauty of course is not measured by outer appearance only, but inner appearance as well. However, because inner appearance can not be changed or bought and does not seem nearly as important to most, many will seek to change their outer appearance to
Krone 3
increase their beauty. The media uses advertisements to influence men and women to build on their original outer appearance to become a closer resemblance on the ideal beauty that society strives for. All mass produced pieces of the pop culture world always contain full pages trying to explain to you how buying this make -up will make you look more like a movie star, or how a certain shampoo will make your hair sleek and shinier making you better looking as a result. These advertisements are complimented by pictures of beautiful women of course who the buyer apparently will look like after they have used this product. Television commercials also play an enormous role in distributing the materials to create better looking people to the public as well. The acne reduction product Clearasil is known as a television network commercial which uses a very beautiful and well known television actor to explain to its watcher how the product can immediately reduce pimples in days. Advertising products of the enhancement of outer appearances on fuel the fire of the ideal body image that media is trying to create. With these products being given out to society, the object of beauty only becomes more important for people to obtain only because they then believe that this attribute is attainable.
This ideal image that everyone tries to attain can drive people to radical decisions resulting in very negative effects on their body and mind. For some people it is simply impossible to attain the standards of beauty that the majority favors, and as a result of that fact they turn to irrational measures. Women who become so self conscious because they see themselves as ugly will sometimes resort to anorexia and bulimia. Because of the advertising of this idea of perfection there has been “psychological fallout from a certain type of body image” (Talking Meds). The media places this burden on top
Krone 4
of women the most by giving them these labels causing more self doubt about their image and whether it is accepted. The Article Disordered Eating and Body Image Disturbances May Be underreported in Male Athletes gives a perfect example of this sort of labeling by explaining how, “A thin man may be considered “skinny” whereas a thin female may be labeled “anorexic”” Women are obviously more directed towards labeling than men because there are so many more aspects they are expected to fill such as weight, their facial appearance, their type of hair style and brand of clothes. This pressure creates more problems for women’s mental stability. Their self esteem is marred by their idea of self image, peer pressure becomes a more frequent quality because the media tells them how their image will not look as bad by buying certain things, and behavior is changed by all of these problems that are caused from these insecurities. All of these problems of outlook on self image are the result of the media and its effect on the image that all people are trying to become.
Physical uniqueness has now become an attribute that most people do not aspire to become because of how the media influences people to go towards one direction of self image. Although being unique can create a new image of beauty to many, the media has made the majority think that they can only become beautiful if they fit the criteria of the ideal woman. Once people become drawn into the clutches of the media they begin to lose their attributes of individuality, creativity, and originality. Girls become more judgmental as a result of this single body image as well. Many begin examining others by how closely they fit the criteria of beautiful. The how for American is to become, “smart and open enough to embrace “unique” beauty” (A Unique Take on Beauty). If uniqueness
Krone 5
were to become an attractive quality once again society would no longer have to worry about problems that are caused by this importance of the single beauty that all wish to have. They would instead have different points of beauty to become.
Perfection and beauty will always be an attribute that everyone tries to attain. Unfortunately, most will not be able to hold this attribute. Not because they do not personally think of themselves as beautiful, but of what society thinks is socially acceptable as beauty. The media of course is to blame for this because of their influence on people’s culture. To them uniqueness is not beautiful. There is only one single type of beauty. The image of the few and lucky that fit their idea of perfection. Media has gained control of this property and will never lose it. Sadly this realization will always be in our society and we will accept it and attempt to become it in our lives. This single self image.

late work: synthesis prompt

after analyzing and looking a little deeper into the prompt I have come to the conclusion that we are not writing so much of an essay on what we beleive, but more of an essay on what one of the writers belives. THis essay is about whether television is a power that will be fought against and eventually consume us, or be treated as a normal part of everyones day and eventually consume us. We will have to write on whether we believe that television is a passive problem in our society or a very up front and controversial one. In order to write a good essay on this prompt I think we will have to chose one of the authors and then write about each sentence the author explains.

late work: Watching TV Makes You Smarter

1. He is trying to protray to the reader that the idea of television being useless may be untrue. That they may be used for something more than just entertainment. He uses an example from a movie to show this.

2. The charts are used to explain how complex these shows really are. They are not a one plot streem of mindless watching but instead a large thread of different plots all colaberating in one show. This makes the people watching it have to think while they watch the show. Naming the show helps us relate the graph as well so we can understand what he is talking about.

3. Multiple threading creates a more interactive way to approach the television show so that you can stay in tune with what is happening and not just zone into the show you are watching. Flashing arrows help me in shows where it is hard to understand things because with these clues given I am able understand what is going on. Social networks don’t seem like anything important to me.

4. He uses a small amount of opposing arguments which seem very small and insignificant not creating a very large impact on the matter. His staments seem to stay in your mind as well.

5. He explains how the new idea of multi thread television is a more intellectually demanding concept and creates a better source of entertainment which is not just mindless watching.
